Each student can apply to up to five universities.

Applicants for medical, dentistry or veterinary courses must choose a non-specialist course as their fifth option.

Students can upload their documents, grades and application details in one place.

Students write a personal statement that is then sent to all universities on their application.

Students wishing to apply for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge must apply earlier than for other universities.

The Guardian Education site is a good source of information on higher education in the UK. It has a league table which you can manipulate to find rankings based on what is important to you. It’s also a good repository of information on applying, what different careers are like and news on what is happening in the higher education sector.

EducationUK provides information on university events, education fairs, IELTS classes and tests and preparing to study in the UK.

DirectGov is a site which goes through the basics of considering courses. In addition to university options it looks at other courses of study – great if you are looking at an alternative to university or a gap year.

Visiting universities is really important and open days are one way to get lots of information in a short time – often they will have presentations on your potential courses, sample lectures as well as tours. Opendays UK gives you lots of information on what you can expect from an open day and handiest of all, a calendar listing all open days on any given day. So if you are going to be in the UK – check out the calendar and see if there is an open day near you.

UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) has useful details for international applicants on many aspects of studying in the UK as well as up to date information on visa issues. It also has home status rules.

Preparing for student life – Prepare for Success is an interactive web learning tool for international students who are getting ready to go to the UK for study in further or higher education. It contains learning resources which are activity-based to help you find out about different aspects of academic life in the UK and the skills needed for effective study.

University of oxford has put together a digital resource hub to help you explore your pathway.

Discover Uni is the UK government’s official course comparison website. It allows students to search and compare degree programmes, see student satisfaction scores, explore graduate outcomes such as jobs and salaries, and check entry requirements and fees, all using trusted national data.

TEF (Teaching Excellence Framework) provides ratings of universities and colleges in the UK on the quality of teaching, learning environment, and student outcomes, helping applicants understand how well a provider is delivering for its students.
